I. About this blog

This blog is about the West Papuan Community in Australia.
For a slideshow of this blog, please visit West Papuan Community in Australia on YouTube.
The notion of community in this case is based on Craig Calhoun’s argument that traditional communities ‘are important basis for radical mobilization’, and community constitutes a preexisting organisation capable of securing the participation of individuals in collective actions, providing a social organisational foundation for mobilization.
‘Communities that resist the incursions of expanding and intensifying state administrations, inequitable social changes are social achievements, collectively created, often in the face of considerable opposition.’ (Calhoun, p. 23, Nations Matter, 2007)
On documenting the communities capacity to engage in a common goal and collective action – i.e their fight for an independent West Papua from Indonesia – this blog will tackle issues around: mobilization in a common goal, how does it work, how do they organise themselves, the impact it has on their community – does this strengthen their community or does it put a strain on the individuals at any time?
Calhoun also argues that collective action requires long term commitments and community members’ willingness to engage in projects which rely upon the contribution of all the parties involved for their success.(Calhoun, 1998)
‘Long term commitment’ and ‘contribution of all parties involved’……
Let’s have a look at the West Papuan community in Australia, do they fit in with Calhoun’s definition of community? Do they show long term commitment, contribution of all parties, capacity to mobilise?
